Business Need

Sundance Institute is a non-profit organization that was founded by Robert Redford in 1981, in an effort to create a supportive environment to advance the works of filmmakers worldwide.  It has set up numerous labs and fellowships to provide creative and financial support to emerging filmmakers, directors, producers, film music composers, screenwriters, and theater artists.  Sundance’s most famous event is the Sundance Film Festival, a venue for showcasing global independent films.

Sundance Institute has numerous regional websites along with Facebook and Twitter pages, in various languages, and has amassed a large fan base in each of the regions.

There are 27 departments within Sundance Institute, all collecting very unique sets of data.  The data are siloed and not typially shared between departments.  This resulted in numerous people requesting for the same information, and the answers being compiled multiple times by different people.

Technology Solution

Sundance Institute wants to be able to track each and every filmmaker, director, producers, film music composer, screenwriter, play write and theater artist that has come through its doors.  It wants to get a detailed picture of how much impact the Institute had in terms of the nurturing the emerging talent.

Zettalytics worked closely with Sundance Institute to first centralize all the data collected from the various departments.  With the process, Sundance is able to get a better sense of how much data it has on each person and how each person is benefited from the Sundance support.

Armed with this information, along with leveraging data visualization tools such as Tableau, Sundance is then able to get a better understanding of each person, and be able to conduct more relevant reach-out campaigns to provide further support.  Conversely, Sundance is able to better understand donor characteristics and be able to initiate more effective donor campaigns.

Technology Stack:

  • MongoDB for Data Staging
  • Python for ETL
  • Redshift for Data Warehouse
  • Tableau for Data Visualization
  • AWS+Docker for Infrastructure and Hosting

Benefits

Storing data in a central data warehouse allows different departments within the organization to collaborate effectively.  As a non-profit organization, it relies on donations to fund initiatives.  Running operations efficiently to stretch every donor dollar possible is immensely important, so that more funds can be channeled towards helping the up-and-coming talents.
